Skip Whitcomb, Judge

PleinAir readers were hard on juror Skip Whitcomb: The Colorado artist had a tough time choosing the finalists in PleinAir magazine's August/September contest, part of the PleinAir Salon. Who did he pick?

Peggy Root was the big winner -- not only did she take First Place Overall (for "March Afternoon") in the August/September contest, she also nabbed the Best Buildings award for "Farm at Red Hill." Joshua Been also pulled in two awards: Third Place for his painting "Icy Banks" and Best Water for "Cascading Pattern."

Second Place Overall went to Marc Dalessio for his oil painting "St. Mark's Nocturne." But Best Nocturne was won by Thomas Kegler for his painting "Moon Pillar: Psalms." Best Figure in the Landscape was won by Paul Oxborough for "Trance Dance," while Lori Putnam was the winner of the Best Floral category with her piece "Long Stemmed." Joseph Gyurcsak won Best Outdoor Still Life for "Vizcaya Courtyard," while Jerry Weiss won Best Plein Air with "Fog on the Coast."

The PleinAir Salon consists of six bi-monthly contests, with the First, Second, and Third Place winners of each contest automatically entered into the annual competition. First prize in the annual competition is $15,000 cash and the publication of the winning image on the cover of PleinAir magazine, along with a feature story. Second Place earns an artist $3,000 and an article in the digital edition of PleinAir magazine. Third Place yields $1,500 in cash. Three additional finalists win $500.
